Why I'm Running

As a mother, educator/advocate, and civil rights lawyer, I believe education is the greatest equalizer. We are all responsible for our most precious commodity--our children. When we show our children that we care about them they will succeed. I care about our children and I will ensure that all students are given every opportunity to have access to an excellent education wherever they live in the District. This is why I’ve decided to run for DeKalb County School Board, District 2.

I am running because of my personal experience in finding my children the right educational fit drove me to seek a seat at the table to have a voice for all. In 2015, my son began sixth grade at a middle school on the East side of DeKalb with very low performance. My son would come home almost daily crying because there was a fight at school. He could not focus in the chaotic environment. In a matter of months, I had to make a change and moved to the north side of DeKalb. The change was like night and day. The academic rigor was unparalleled, the aura of high expectations danced through the halls of the schools from the teachers/staff, and the school was rich with diversity. It took us moving to a more affluent zip code for my son to have access to a high-quality education. No longer should race, socio-economic status, or zip code determine the level of education a child is afforded in DeKalb.

I am running because I know that nothing happens overnight and that change happens incrementally. When I taught first and second grade in Atlanta Public Schools in a housing community, my students were labeled as ‘less than’ and unable to learn because of their environment. Every day in my classroom, I saw my scholars as the future and poured all I could into them--never treating them as something other than great. We have to see all students as capable and cultivate their genius. We can work together to change the expectation in our District that no matter where you come from--you can achieve anything.

I am running in District #2 because its time. I have honed my legal skills as a practitioner in the areas of education and civil rights law. It’s time for me to step up, express the bold ideas I have for change, and push the status quo. We are One DeKalb, We are Diverse, and we will continue to educate all our students at the highest level.

With your help we can do much more for our students. I ask that you stand with me and vote for Candice D. McKinley for Dekalb County School Board, District #2 on May 24, 2022.

It's time to give all students the opportunity to succeed! I will prioritize our students' success by:

  • Prioritizing school safety and secure learning environments;

  • Funding all schools  in our district  equitably;

  • Bringing transparency and fairness to disciplinary processes; and

  • Guaranteeing every child has an accessible, quality education regardless of race, socio-economic status, or zip-code.
